A marina operator was repainting timber pier surfaces every 18-24 months and replacing rotted boards every 5-7 years. Operating cost per square meter of pier was ~$45/year for maintenance. They wanted a lower-maintenance solution.
We supplied 4 × 8 ft × 1/2 inch HDPE sheets with textured (orange-peel) surface for slip resistance. Sheets were cut to fit between pier rails and screwed down to the existing timber substructure with stainless steel deck screws.
Annual maintenance cost dropped from ~$45/m²/year to ~$2/m²/year (just an annual pressure wash). Payback on the HDPE installation in 3.5 years. Bonus: eliminated splinter complaints from barefoot guests.
